Aamir Khan's Thugs of Hindostan fails to impress in China.

     Aamir Khan starrer Thugs of Hindostan is the first movie that failed to click with the audience in China after the huge success of his previous films 3 Idiots, Dangal and Secret Superstars which won him massive revenues, besides a huge fan following.

      Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan failed to impress Chinese audiences with a poor opening on Friday which will be his first flop in the Chinese market after a string of box office hits.

    This is the first movie that failed to click in China after the massive success of his previous films 3 Idiots, Dangal and Secret Superstars which won him massive revenues besides a huge fan following.

Thugs of Hindostan raked 10.74 million yuan (USD1.56 million) at the box office and according to Chinese movie ticketing platform Maoyan, the movie is estimated to get in only 96.1 million yuan, possibly the worst of Aamir’s movie performances in China, state-run Global Times reported this weekend.

     Thugs of Hindostan had performed miserably at the Indian box office too and the makers had hoped Aamir’s popularity in China will help the film pull through but that did not happen, the report said.

    Aamir, who is known as Mi Shu or Uncle Mi in China, had produced a special Chinese edition. He had also promoted the film for almost two weeks before the release by visiting a number of key cities including Guangzhou, Xi’an, Nanjing, and Shanghai.

    Before Thugs of Hindostan, Aamir’s Dangal and Secret Superstar had also released in China. While Dangal managed to find a place in the top 30 all-time highest grossing films in China, Secret Superstar managed to collect above Rs 750 crore at the Chinese box office.

     Earlier, at an event in Mumbai, Aamir Khan had taken the responsibility of the failure of Thugs of Hindostan. He said, “I take full responsibility for Thugs not working with the audience. I think we went wrong but I would like to take full responsibility for that. You can be sure we tried our level best. We didn’t leave any stone unturned but somewhere we went wrong. There are some people who liked the film, and we would like to thank them but they are in minority. The majority didn’t like and we realize this.”

    Simmba box office collection Day 5: Going by its performance, it seems the Rohit Shetty directorial won’t slow down anytime soon. The film also has no competition at the box office this week.

Simmba continues to dominate the box office. The film is all set to cross the Rs 100 crore mark.

The Ranveer Singh starrer, which hit screens on December 28, had an impressive beginning at the box office. With a Rs 20.72 crore collection on opening day, the film became Ranveer’s highest opener. His earlier release Padmaavat had managed to mint Rs 19 crore.

    On Monday, Simmba earned better than its opening day. The Sara Ali Khan film minted Rs 21.24 crore, taking the total to Rs 96.35 crore. Going by its performance, it seems the Rohit Shetty directorial won’t slow down anytime soon. The film also has no competition at the box office this week.

     Karan Johar took to Instagram and heaped praise on Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh, He wrote, “Working with @itsrohitshetty has been one of the best experiences of my life! Have learned so much from his process and his precision! Making a mainstream film that is loved across the audience base is no mean task and he has mastered the art of doing just that!!! He loves his audiences tremendously and only makes movies for them! Thank u my dearest Rohit for everything! You have a large heart and a solid one too! @ranveersingh is and will always be SIMMBA for life!! You two were meant to be brothers in biceps!!!! Love you!!! Thank you! What a great end of the year to have!!!”

     While the audience seems to be loving the film, critics gave mixed reviews. The Indian Express critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, “In Singham Returns Again, oops, sorry, Simmba, a police officer sloughs off his rough-and-ready skin and emerges as the savior of the poor and meek. Wait, haven’t we seen that before? Bad question, because this one could just as well have been called Singham part 3.”

Upcoming Bollywood films 2019: Uri, Gully Boy, Bharat, and others.

    The year 2018 was a good one for the Hindi film industry. And now, Bollywood is all set to step into 2019 with a bang as it offers an interesting line up of films.

    The year 2018 was a good one for the Hindi film industry. Small budget films from different genres like Stree, Badhaai Ho, Raazi, Mulk and Andhadhun held the top spot. The audience rejected star vehicles Race 3, Thugs of Hindostan and Zero and made their preference for good content loud and clear. Ranveer Singh’s Simmba gave the year a perfect ending. And now, Bollywood is all set to step into 2019 with a bang as it offers an interesting line up of films.

    After ruling 2018 with films like Raazi, Sanju, Lust Stories and Manmarziyaan, Vicky Kaushal is all set to impress cinephiles in his all-new avatar of an army officer in Aditya Dhar’s military drama Uri.

    The film, also starring Yami Gautam and Paresh Rawal, is based on the 2016 surgical strikes on Pakistan, after the Uri Base Camp in Jammu & Kashmir was attacked. The official synopsis of the movie reads, “A defining moment in India’s military history. A moment that paved a path to a new, stronger India. Presenting URI.”

Gully Boy posters: Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt look street-smart.

    Zoya Akhtar directorial Gully Boy starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh is all set to hit the theaters on February 14, 2019. On Wednesday, Ranveer took to his official Twitter handle and shared a poster of himself from the film. He plays the role of a street rapper in the movie.

     Zoya Akhtar directorial Gully Boy starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh is all set to hit the theaters on February 14, 2019. While the audience is waiting to watch Ranveer and Alia together on the celluloid for the first time, the makers have teased them with the posters of the movie.

    On Wednesday, Simmba actor Ranveer took to his official Twitter handle and shared a poster of himself from Gully Boy. He plays the role of a street rapper in the movie. The poster has Ranveer standing in a street wearing the same hoodie which we saw in the first few photos from the sets of the film. The lyrics which are probably written by Ranveer’s character are also inscribed on the poster. The tagline of the film reads, “Apna Time Aayega (Our time will come)”.

    Sharing the poster, Ranveer wrote, “The voice of the streets. #GullyBoy #14thFeb.” A few minutes later he shared another poster which features female lead of the film Alia Bhatt as well. The poster looks impressive as both Alia and Ranveer are immersed in their characters.

The genius of screenwriter Kader Khan.

     What Kader Khan really did best was nail the cadence of the character he was writing for, and that’s what made those dialogues so perfect, and so apt.

      “Bade bade paper mein apun ka chota chota photo chapta hai.”

     The year, 1977. The speaker of that iconic dialogue, Anthony Gonsalves. The film, Amar Akbar Anthony. The director, the king of masala Manmohan Desai. And the dialogue writer, the one and only Kader Khan. Those dialogues made us laugh louder than we had in a long time. We held our bellies. We guffawed. And we returned, just to hear those lines again. And again.

    By then, Bachchan had cemented his reputation as the hero who could do anything. Fight off 20 people in a godown, wiping the blood off his chin, and glowering that famous glower. What AAA did give him was the chance to cross over to the comic side. And he became the star who could do action, drama, and comedy. It could well have been that Bachchan got so big because he was at the intersection of a certain time and place in Hindi cinema, but there’s no doubt that a lot of it had to do with the genius of Kader Khan.

     Only those who have experienced and loved the masala cinema of the 70s and 80s Bollywood will understand the real significance of that moniker ‘dialogue writer’.

Kader Khan was a father figure to me: Govinda.

    Kader Khan and Govinda delivered numerous blockbusters in the 1990s. On the demise of the veteran actor-screenwriter, Govinda remembered working with him and how Khan was more than a mentor to him.

     Govinda and Kader Khan had one of the most successful collaborations of the 1990s. The duo mostly appeared in David Dhawan’s blockbuster comedies. Hearing the news about Khan’s demise on Tuesday, Govinda shared his memories of working with the veteran actor.

    “Kader Khan sir is no more with us. He was not just a mentor but also a father figure to me. He had such finesse that whichever artiste he worked with or collaborated with, became a star, in fact, a superstar. The entire film industry and my family cannot express the loss in words. I pray to God to grant peace to his soul, and may he find a place in heaven,” Govinda told indianexpress.com.

    Bollywood veteran actor-screenwriter Kader Khan passed away on Tuesday in Canada at the age of 81. His son Sarfaraz confirmed the news to indianexpress.com. The actor was hospitalized after complaining of breathlessness. According to reports, Khan had been put on a ventilator a few days ago.

    In a career spanning over 45 years, a major portion of Khan’s filmography was with Govinda and director David Dhawan. The trio, who literally ruled the comic scene in the 1990s, delivered blockbusters like Saajan Chale Sasural, Hero №1, Coolie №1, Banarasi Babu, Kunwara, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Haseena Maan Jaayegi.

    Govinda and Kader Khan also worked in other hit films under different directors including Akhiyon Se Goli Maare, Dulhe Raja and Joru Ka Ghulam. While they played the adorable father-son in Hero №1, they were at loggerheads in Dulhe Raja. Govinda and Khan last appeared together onscreen in Deewana Main Deewana, which got delayed and ultimately released after 10 years in 2013.

From teaching civil engineering to stage acting and cinema, Kader Khan led a dramatic life, both off and on screen.

    Veteran actor Kader Khan who died today at 81 leaves behind countless cinematic memories. Especially memorable is his legendary pairing with Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda and Johnny Lever.

       He was the silver-haired mob boss in Parvarish (1977), tossing out the punchy lines (which he had written himself, as its dialogue writer) with relish. He once again played a character with negative shades in Naseeb (1981), this time charred to death by protagonist Amitabh Bachchan in its burning climax. Both films were directed by Manmohan Desai, often called the showman with the famous stock-in-trade that went by the name of lost-and-found. A multi-starrer the likes of which Bollywood doesn’t make anymore, the cast of Parvarish and Naseeb read the who’s who of 1970s Hindi cinema. Besides Bachchan, there was Rishi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Shakti Kapoor, and Pran. Throughout the 1970s and even much later, Kader Khan teamed up with several of these stars to produce some of Hindi cinema’s finest entertainers.

     Pran, Amjad Khan, and Amrish Puri are long gone. And now, Kader Khan. 81 and ailing, Khan passed away in Canada today but will be mourned and missed widely in India and Pakistan where he has a substantial following, thanks to over 700 popular Hindi films in which he acted and helped write. Bachchan, a lifelong friend (though the late Khan sparred with him in later years), called him a “brilliant stage artist” and a “writer of eminence in most of my very successful films” in a tweet. “If you were a late 80s-90s kid who watched Hindi films, chances are you encountered the magic of Kader Khan,” tweeted Smriti Irani. Though the Textiles Minister and former TV star never worked with him she said if she ever had, “I would say, ‘thank you for the laughter.” Obviously, the ‘laughter’ bit is an ode to Khan’s seamless transition to comic roles in the 1980s and ’90s, usually in a David Dhawan slapstick with Govinda, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor for the company.
